Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are the most common questions people have about my website and resources.

Digital Products

Which resources are available on tfurber.com?
For A-level Economics, we have 1) practice papers, 2) model answers, 3) blogposts on exam technique and 4) economics notes.

For those applying for university economics courses, we have 1) economics personal statement advice and 2) economics interview advice and practice questions.

How do you come up with practice questions?
I have been coming with new practice papers in AQA and Edexcel Economics A style for each year.

The papers are based on current affairs topics. They also take into account topics which have not come up recently in past papers.

Do you have reviews available?
Yes! Check out the page here.

What does each set of practice papers cost?
The stated price is for all papers included in the set. Usually the price is £15 for a set of three practice papers and mark schemes. Here, £15 is the combined, total price for all these items. But the price may vary for some sets of papers.

The price is lower than other economics practice papers. I also hope to reduce this price over time.

How will I receive the products after purchase?
Currently all products are digital downloads (PDF files).

So after payment is made, you should immediately be taken to the purchase confirmation page, where download starts automatically.

Also, you should receive an email with links to the PDF file. Please check all email addresses and your spam folder. If you cannot find the link in your email addresses, it’s in one of these two places 95% of the time.

In the very unlikely event that you still cannot locate the product, you are most welcome to email me at tomftutor@gmail.com. We will then sort it out quickly.

Are these practice papers also predictions?
When writing 2022 practice papers, these were based on the “advance information”. This was a list of topics publicly available which will appear on the test – this was a Covid-19 measure to give students who had been through lockdown extra support. As a result, it was reasonable to make “predictions” for what would come up in the exam, based on the advance information.

For the 2023 papers, I am calling them “practice papers” instead. There is no longer any advance information. The 2023 papers cover current affairs topics and take into account topics that have not recently appeared.

But you should not rely on any one set of papers for “predictions”. Instead, I recommend students revise widely and prepare for all sorts of topics to appear in their exams.

In what format are the practice papers and model answers available?
The practice papers and model answers are available as PDF ebook files. This is advantageous for multiple reasons:

  1. After purchase, you can access the resource instantly. You should be able to download immediately from the purchase confirmation page. Also, you should receive an email with a link to the product. This is much better than waiting days or weeks to receive something in the post.
  2. As a result, there are less likely to be issues that prevent shipping of products.
  3. It saves paper. Though if you prefer, you can always print it out too!.
I am a teacher. Can I get a receipt of purchase or invoice for my school?
I am very happy to help with such requests from teachers.

Purchasers usually receive an email with a purchase receipt automatically. In case this is not sufficient for the receipt needed for your school, please let me know and I’d be happy to sort this out.

What are the benefits of using practice papers?
The academic evidence shows that on average, those who use practice papers see grade improvement compared with those who do not.

This is a powerful result.

I have witnessed this as a student. Writing my own practice questions helped me in achieving top grades. This was also a key tactic in some of my supervisors on the Cambridge Economics course. As a former tutor, students have said that doing practice papers has helped them get ahead.

Grade improvement matters. This can be the difference between those making it to their preferred university or not. Grades can remain on CVs while starting out your career.

There are other possible benefits, such as an A) increase in confidence going into exams and B) increased interest and motivation to practise. When revision is based on current affairs, that can be more exciting for students.

Caveats: the academic evidence result, that practice papers improve grades, is an average. So it will require students to make best use of practice papers and does not account for other events like having a bad day. It also does not compensate for a lack of preparation for the exam, nor can they guarantee a particular grade. Practice papers should not be relied upon for topics but just used for extra practice.

How do you determine prices? Are the prices high or low?

I would like to make economics accessible to everyone, so 95% of the content I create is free to view on this website. A small proportion of the information is paid. This covers most of the cost of creating the free blogposts and information on this website.

I try to make sure prices are below other similar resources for economics. I have noted that some resources on other websites are particularly pricy. In the coming years, I plan to reduce the price of resources gradually, to make economics resources even more accessible.

I think my resources are underpriced relative to their benefits. Read the answer to the question “What are the benefits of using practice papers” and consider me how much you would value those benefits for the average person.

That said, I appreciate by putting a price on something, it means not everyone can afford it. If you can submit evidence of low income (free school meals for example), I am happy to provide a discount. But only if evidence is provided. Otherwise, unfortunately, I cannot tell whether people are trying to pull a fast one. Any evidence provided shall be treated securely and then deleted soon after viewing.

Other (website, about, tutoring)

Are you available for tutoring?
Thank you for your interest. I do not take on tuition students any more. This allows me to help more students through this website and pursue other ventures.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a tutor. I know it can be difficult to find someone. So I recommend looking far and wide, including for individual tutor websites and tutoring platforms.

Please kindly note that if you do contact me about tutoring, you will receive a variant of this message above.

Who are you?
I am Tom. Previously an economist and economics tutor, I am now an entrepreneur and educator. My goal, through this website, is to offer students resources that help them on their economics education journey.
