10 Top A-level and IB Economics Resources for 2024

As a former economics tutor, I have created a list of the top Economics A-level online resources (in no particular order).

I base this on my experience interacting with both students and teachers. They have told me which resources work best for them.

Effective resources, when used well, can be the difference between grades.

1. Economics Help

Economics help has some great notes on various Economics A-level topics.

The notes are often detailed and explain the subject matter well.

Here are one or two examples:

2. Trading Economics

Great for macroeconomics statistics.

For example, if you want the latest UK inflation, economic growth or current account figures.

You can also find statistics for many other countries.

These stats are key to scoring those application marks in exams.

Here is a list of key indicators for the UK economy.

I recommend combining this with reading news articles. This will help understand the statistics. For example, why is there inflation in the UK?

3. tfurber.com

tfurber.com has notes on exam technique, model answers and practice papers.

The content is specific to Edexcel A and AQA exam boards.

There are detailed articles on how to analyse and evaluate, as well as how to use diagrams.

Check out these links for a few of the best resources:

Other resources

4. Physicsandmathstutor

This website has a record of past papers, including those for the previous syllabus.

They also have good summary notes, by topic, for different exam boards.

5. Econplusdal

Econplusdal’s videos are regarded as legendary among economics students and teachers.

The videos are quick, well-explained and engaging. Good for understanding some of the more difficult topics.

Here are two of my favourite Econplusdal videos, that I often recommend to students.

6. Exam board websites.

Exam board websites include Edexcel, AQA, CIE and so on.

Key documents on these websites include the specification, past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

Specification (syllabus) lists the headings of all content you need to know for the exam. Go through the syllabus and mark those areas that you do not understand or know.

Reviewing the syllabus is particularly important where economics teaching is patchy. This can help students to check that all syllabus areas are being covered in class.

Examiner reports tell you the most common mistakes to avoid. So I recommend reading these for extra exam technique tips.

The websites may have other resources hidden away too. This can include model answers or advice to teachers, though these vary with the exam board.

7. News websites (Sky, BBC and so on).

News pages have up to date information on current markets.

This includes microeconomic insights, like how energy prices are changing or competition rulings.

But there are also macroeconomic updates, such as monthly inflation updates.

It is important not just to know facts and stats.

But also understanding the stories behind the stats can help link the real world with economic theory. News websites are particularly good for trying to understand these facts.

8. Economics online

This website has more great notes, often with lots of detail, on key economics topics.

Here are two good note pages on topics:

When using notes websites, make sure you know what is examinable and what isn’t for your particular exam board. That way, you can focus on the content that’s relevant to you.

9. Peer networks

Working together with other students can be a good motivator. Either through collaboration or competition.

Consider working with other students in your school at a similar level to (or higher level than) you.

Some people also use online forums, like The Student Room. These can be helpful for revision or exam discussions.

10. Tutor2u

Some great explainer pages, with key facts and statistics.

There are also some helpful Youtube videos on exam technique and revision. See these examples:
